Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes the saga of a young woman who dares to chart her own destiny in life and love during the American Revolutionary War。

In 1760, Deborah Samson is born to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts。 When her father abandons the family and her mother is unable to support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant。 From that moment on, she yearns for a life of liberation and adventure。

Twenty years later, as the American colonies begin to buckle in their battle for independence, Deborah, impassioned by the cause, disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental Army。 Her impressive height and lanky build make her transformation a convincing one, and it isn’t long before she finds herself confronting the horrors of war head-on。

But as Deborah fights for her country’s freedom, she must contend with the secret of who she is—and, ultimately, a surprising love she can’t deny。

SPOILER-FREE REVIEW⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+❤️Amy Harmon is a national treasure。 She's done it again。 Oh, Deborah Samson! This book has a place in my heart forever。 My expectations were *sky high* for A Girl Called Samson - this was undoubtedly my most anticipated read of the year。 My hopes were so high I suspected there was a possibility that there was no way to actually fulfill them, because the whole premise of the book is just straight up catnip to me 😂 boy was I wrong。 If I was an author - this is the bo SPOILER-FREE REVIEW⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+❤️Amy Harmon is a national treasure。 She's done it again。 Oh, Deborah Samson! Deborah Samson is strong, and I mean strongggg。 I don't know that I've ever read a more determined, yet relatable character。 Her devotion to herself, her cause, her love - wow, it's just out of this world raw and beautiful。 There is nothing this woman would not do。One of my favorite aspects is the way Amy wove scripture throughout。 This whole book is full of beautiful verses。 Revelation - really? I was not okay 😭💒 how she wrote the faith of the characters was so real and poignant。I did not want this story to end, but I sabotaged myself and refused to put it down。 I will probably just reread this story over again, because there is just simply nothing else for me to read 🤷‍♀️ A Girl Called Samson has stolen my heart! What more can I say? Pre-order, put it on your wish list, get in the holds line - however you get a book in your hand, you're going to want this one! Do yourself a favor and don't read a ton of reviews on this one - besides the premise, which really gives nothing away, I went in completely blind and I think you should too 😘Content: Going in, I was nervous about the violence against women that could be in a story like this。 I'm so happy to say, there was none of that。 I'm a very sensitive reader and while there is of course, battle violence, this book is free of the weird sadism I'm sure other authors would have created。 I trusted Amy and I'm so glad I did! As with Amy's other books, there is physical romance on the page。 There are a few curse words, "g-d" being 2 of them。 Similar to Ordinary Grace or Small Things Like These, the content isn't squeaky "clean," but the message is crystal clear ❤️ 。。。more

I knew by the end of the first chapter I was going to love the book。 Deborah was such an endearing and amazing character and person, both in the book and in history。 Her candor and passion were my favorite。 I love that this was based on the real woman who made an incredible impact and did the unthinkable, enlisting in the Revolutionary War by pretending to be a man, simply because it was the only way to accomplish it。 And quite honestly, I love the ending Amy gave her over the real thing so I’m I knew by the end of the first chapter I was going to love the book。 Deborah was such an endearing and amazing character and person, both in the book and in history。 Her candor and passion were my favorite。 I love that this was based on the real woman who made an incredible impact and did the unthinkable, enlisting in the Revolutionary War by pretending to be a man, simply because it was the only way to accomplish it。 And quite honestly, I love the ending Amy gave her over the real thing so I’m not disappointed in the least by those alterations。 There were so many thought provoking and inspiring things in the story。 Deborah didn’t despise who she was, only that other people limited what that could be solely because of her gender。 But instead of living within those limits, she decided to break her ceiling in the only way she knew how。 There is still sometimes debate over women’s roles, although we’ve obviously made so much progress, so I understand some of her sentiment and desire for a purpose beyond what others expect us to be。 I think the statement of “maybe it is because we are treasured, as John once said, but it is one thing to be treasured and it is another to be a treasure。 One is valued, one is possessed, and people aren’t possessions。” Man。 So much truth in that statement。 Deborah’s story made me think of so many women before me who fought for themselves, were put in impossible situations just trying to follow their purpose and calling, or judged wrongly that they were trying to *be* men, simply because they believed they were capable of more。 Also, I adored John。 His sacrifice, loyalty and priority for his men in an enormously brutal war, and his devotion and love for Deborah will make him hard to forget。 Thank you, Amy Harmon, for the advanced copy of the book。 Absolutely loved it。 。。。more
